A starving dog in need of urgent medical care was rescued from the streets of Paterson on Saturday night, according to a local animal shelter.
The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge and Jersey Pits Rescue, a group that helps neglected pit bulls, are working to save the dog who they named Reese. The dog was taken to Oradell Animal Hospital.
“Rescuers’ hearts sank seeing this sweet soul, skin and bones, just lying there helpless in desperate need,” the shelter said in a statement.
The shelter responded at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after getting a call from Paterson animal control officers. It’s unclear where in Paterson the dog was found.
“We don’t know how long this beautiful dog has been suffering,” said Megan Brinster, executive director of the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge. “All we know is that we have to try and help. We know that our friends at Jersey Pits will be there with us as we move fast to try and save Reese. We also know that you, our dedicated rescue community, will join with us as we stand together for Reese.”
Pit bulls are the most abused and neglected breed across our nation, according to the animal shelter. Jersey Pits Rescue, which helps find homes for abandoned and neglected pit bulls, wrote on Facebook that it was “sick and tired of disgusting human beings” who mistreat animals.
“We cannot comprehend how this poor soul is even alive and we are at a total loss for words. We’re not sure how much longer this baby can hold on for, but we have to do everything we possibly can to try to save this worthy life,” the group wrote.
Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge and Jersey Pits Rescue are seeking donations for Reese’s care and are providing updates about Reese’s condition on Facebook. Nearly $4,300 had been raised by 9 a.m. Sunday,
